This program is targeted to those in an acute crisis who need immediate medical care.Services Severe depression or anxiety, psychotic symptoms and the need for medication stabilization are examples of such crises. Our clinical approach is to quickly intervene through medical management, establishment of support systems and solution-focused therapy.

Behavioral Medicine Unit

SAMC's Behavioral Health Unit is a medically supervised and licensed facility offering individual program plans for adults 19 years and older. The mission of the Behavioral Health team is to provide adult crisis intervention, stabilization, and treatment. The team consists of board-certified psychiatrists, certified psychiatric nurses, a mental health clinical specialist, licensed professional counselors, occupational therapists, and mental health associates who implement treatment plans and monitor patient progress toward individual treatment goals.

Geriatric Behavioral Health Unit

The Geriatric Program is designed for adults 65 years of age or older. It offers individualized treatment that is specific and sensitive to development or situational crises of older adults. Through a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment process, this program helps the patient and family reach the highest possible level of productivity and mental health.

Outpatient Psychiatric Services

AltaCare

AltaCare provides psychiatric programs for adults, adolescents, and children. Our caring staff provides effective mental health treatment for depression, acute stress and anxiety, loss or grief issues, and other psychiatric or behavioral problems. We also provide chemical dependency services to treat substance abusse issues based on the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Our Compassion and Respect for Every Senior (CARES) program at Southeast Alabama Medical CenterCARESProgram is a high-quality inpatient psychiatric program for adults ages 65 and older who are faced with an emotional or behavioral problem, distress or anxiety.

CARES provides professional help to older adults dealing with life-changing events such as the loss of a spouse, physical limitations and changes in mental status who may be experiencing emotional, cognitive or behavioral symptoms which have disrupted everyday life. Our multi-disciplined approach includes assessment, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care.

We treat those who:

    Have impaired thinking Have severe anxiety, agitation or obsessions Have depression Have severely impaired social functioning Have legal or family dysfunction Are suicidal or may be potentially dangerous to others

Our Mood and Anxiety Disorders (MAP) program at Southeast Alabama Medical Center is a short-termMoodAnxietyDisorders inpatient treatment program for individuals ages 19 and over who are suffering from a variety of disorders including:

    Bipolar Disorder Anxiety/Panic Disorder Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder Severe Depression Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Phobias Adult Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Seasonal Affective Disorder Dysthymic Disorder

Our innovative program offers a wide range of treatment options based on an in-depth evaluation and a review of the case history of each patient. Our evidence-based care follows a multi-disciplinary approach and is individualized – designed to meet specific patient needs in a compassionate and respectful environment.

Our professional staff maintains strict confidentiality and includes the patient in treatment decisions. We treat you like family – like we'd want our family treated.

MAP also serves as a referral center for medical and surgical patients within the Medical Center who may need evaluation and treatment for psychiatric disorders occurring in conjunction with general medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, chronic pain or cancer.

MAP is the region's largest hospital-based short term inpatient program for mood and anxiety disorders.

SAMC's Intensive Treatment Program (ITP) is a mental health inpatient program for adults ages 19 and overIntensiveTreatmentProgram who are in acute crisis due to mental illness, emotional distress or destructive behavior patterns.

The program is designed to stabilize patients who require a more controlled environment for healing and growth with the goal of easing them back into a return to their everyday routines.

Our highly experienced team of psychiatrists, nurses, social workers and others provide intensive care to those individuals whose mental health status requires they be treated within a secure environment. In the ITP, we believe people are entitled to high-quality care in an environment that is safe, therapeutic and offers individual choice.

Our ITP includes:

    Crisis stabilization with medication management Medical evaluation Treatment planning Individual therapy Insight-oriented group therapy Family therapy A 24-hour staff presence Discharge planning and aftercare

We specialize in assessing and treating people who have severe and/or enduring mental health problems through the establishment of a treatment plan, with input from the patient and their families.

The ITP is a specialized area of the Medical Center which allows for closer observation. Our ITP is the region's largest hospital-based inpatient program.
