The SAMC Foundation is 65 percent into its fundraising goal of $4.1 million for the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine (ACOM).
During a public campaign kickoff event at the college, Foundation Executive Director Valerie Barnes announced that $2.66 million has been raised for the future needs of the college. Funds have thus far been raised from private donations from more than 200 individuals and businesses.
"We're thrilled and honored by the contributions from the community," Barnes said. "All of those dollars have come in the last year during very difficult economic times."
Construction at ACOM remains ahead of schedule for the August 2013 opening. More than 2,100 applications for admission have been received by the college. Offers of acceptance have been sent to 132 students and 29 have made a deposit indicating they plan to enroll at ACOM. The 132 students include 43 from Alabama or a neighboring state.
